The World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb, one of the most important animation film festivals in the world, will be held this year from 2nd to 7th June.

As same as every year, we would like to deliver you a special interview with Daniel Šuljić, the artistic director of the festival, to be able to quickly grab the whole picture of the upcoming Animafest Zagreb 2025 for your preparation to get the best out of the festival.

Interview with Daniel Šuljić

Hideki Nagaishi (HN): Could you please let us know the highlights of Animafest Zagreb 2025 from your viewpoint?

Daniel Šuljić: It’s that time of the year again — the wonderfully crazy week when we come together to celebrate animation in all its forms! As always, one of the biggest highlights for me is the International Short Film Competition. It’s the heart of the festival — showcasing a stunning variety of styles, voices, and storytelling approaches from all over the world.

But what really stands out this year is the thematic program, which dives into some of the most urgent issues of our time — immigration, war, state terror, and activism. It’s powerful to see how animation can be such a vital tool for social commentary and emotional truth.

We’re also thrilled to welcome guest presentations from younger Japanese filmmakers, including Ryo Orikasa and Sarina Nihei, bringing thoughtful, experimental approaches to animation. And this year’s guest country is South Korea, so we’re shining a spotlight on the country’s scene that’s bursting with talent and creativity.

That said, the real highlight — and always has been — is the people. We’re expecting around 400 international guests, along with local animators and audiences. There’s a beautiful mix of familiar faces who return year after year and new ones joining us for the first time. Animafest has always taken pride in making everyone feel truly welcome, appreciated, and loved. That’s what makes the atmosphere here so special — it’s not just about films, it’s about community and connection. People from around the globe just fall in love with the energy we have here.

HN: Did you find any trends in the submitted films to Animafest Zagreb 2025?

Daniel Šuljić: Yes, definitely — we could say there was a higher number of films that revolve around two specific themes. The first, which is also reflected in our thematic program, is a noticeable increase in activist and politically engaged films. There’s a strong presence of works that address global and social issues, showing how animation continues to be a powerful medium for raising awareness and provoking thought.

The second trend appeared particularly in the student submissions: several films dealt with family conflict, especially situations involving parents arguing or separating, and the emotional impact this has on children. It’s a deeply personal and sensitive subject, and it was moving to see how many young filmmakers chose to explore it.

Another trend I noticed — and I hope it’s just temporary — is that student films were generally a bit less humorous this year. It seems like students are becoming more serious in their storytelling, which can be powerful, but I do hope we see the return of a bit more playfulness and humour in the future as well.

HN: Could you please let us know your impression about the films nominated for each official competition?

Daniel Šuljić: It’s once again a very exciting year, with many interesting contributions! I’m not saying that everyone will enjoy every film in every program — but that’s exactly the point of real art: to challenge, to question, to experiment. Sometimes it succeeds, and sometimes it fails — and that’s perfectly okay. That’s what makes life beautiful, diversity! All these unique styles and creative approaches make the festival so rich and inspiring.

Personally, I never like to highlight specific films from the competitions, because I want all of them to have an equal chance in the eyes of our international juries. And they certainly won’t have an easy task this year — in my opinion, there are many strong contenders for our awards!

HN: Do you have any messages for animation students and animation professionals who plant to attend Animafest Zagreb 2025?

Daniel Šuljić: Yes — first and foremost, welcome! Whether you’re a student just starting out or a seasoned professional, Animafest Zagreb is here for you. It’s a space not only to showcase works, but also to connect, to learn, and to be inspired. I would encourage everyone attending to really embrace the experience — watch as many films as you can, attend the talks, join the masterclasses, and most importantly, talk to people. Some of the most meaningful moments happen in between the official events — over coffee, in the theatre lobby, or while strolling through the city.

For students especially: be curious, be bold, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Festivals like Animafest are rare opportunities to meet your heroes, learn from your peers, and start building your path in the animation world.

For professionals: take this time to recharge your creative energy. You’ll find a lot of fresh perspectives and innovative approaches here — it’s a chance to both reflect and grow.

And of course, beyond the films and panels, Zagreb has such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a city and a festival that truly values its guests. So come with an open heart and open mind — I promise, you’ll leave inspired.
