1.Presenting 83 new TV series projects
From 11th to 14th September 2017, Cartoon Forum will be held in Toulouse, France. Cartoon Forum was established in 1990 for the growth of the co-production and distribution of European animation for television and new media platforms. It has helped finance 706 animation series, over 2.4 billion EUR since its start. About 900 sector professionals will have the opportunity to discover 470 hours of animated series content that have original stories and innovative visual material.
Projects selected from 23 countries
To date, 83 projects from 23 countries have been selected to be pitched at Cartoon Forum 2017. One of the big trends of this year’s Cartoon Forum is that 70% of the projects are 2D projects.
By country:
France leads the selection with 28 projects, followed by Ireland with 9 projects, Belgium and Poland with 5 projects. A list of the selected countries expands to wider Europe: Finland, Italy, Spain, UK, Germany, Portugal, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden and more.
For the third year, selected projects include three Korean projects Animal Rescue, Botos Family, and The curious world of Linda from Cartoon Connection Asia.
By medium:
European producers continue to focus on developing cross-media contents. 50% of the selected projects can be viewed on mobile phones, video games, tablets or the Internet, in addition to television screens.
By target audience:
Half of the projects are aimed at children. Pre-school series represent a third of the projects and less than 10% of the shows are aimed at the “new” target of young adults and adults.
Emerging talents:
Three projects pitched at the Cartoon Springboard 2016, an event for young talents, were selected for the Cartoon Forum 2017: Hungry Bear Tales, Mabel Cleans Up, and The Brownies.
Spotlights Poland
Cartoon Forum will spotlight one country for the second time. Poland will be the country to be highlighted. Polish animation including their five selected projects this year will appear as a constant thread throughout Cartoon Forum such as presentations of Polish studios during Croissant Shows, Polish Farewell Dinner & Party.
The animation industry in Poland has shown a great potential over the last few years. There are more than 30 active animation studios in Poland. In 2017, the budget for development and film production amounted to 94 million PLN (21.3 million EUR). The allocation for the production of animated films its approximately 20 million PLN (4.6 million EUR) (including the production of TV series, films for children and youth and animated films).
A public event “Les Toons débarquent!”
“Les Toons débarquent!” is a local initiative to promote cartoons. There will be an opportunity for families and children to preview animated films in the presence of the director with a selection of short films made in the region. Open-air screenings throughout the week will also highlight the heroes of animated series originating in Toulouse and in the region, introducing different animation techniques.
