Interview with Annick Teninge, the director of the school

1. Could you please give us an overview of the curriculum of the animation course?

Annick Teninge: During the two-year programme, we have a very structured curriculum.

First year
The first term of the first year is devoted to doing lots of very short exercises. For example, they’ll spend two days doing an exercise in animation, then two days in sound design, another couple of days working on editing, sound recording, directing actors, etc. In the second term, they get to make their first film. This is the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned during the first term into a film of one minute maximum. After this second term, we go back to the writing and concept development process. They work in groups and focus on developing a concept for a TV special and a TV series.

Second year
The main project for students during the second year is their four-minute graduation film. But they don’t focus solely on their graduation film because we organize short breaks to get them to focus on other projects such as Les Espoirs de l’Animation (one-minute films for children).

2. What do you think are your unique characteristics or strengths?

Annick Teninge: We are a school where people, who have already been trained in animation techniques, wish to specialize in directing films. We have, on average, only about nine students per year and offer them a tailored program to study the art of animation filmmaking (learning storytelling, writing, staging, editing, music and sound design), full-time. They are given plenty of opportunities to flourish their artistic talents through our two-year program since they work both on short films (on various formats and genres) and more constrained exercises. They get very personal training and meet around 80 different industry professionals throughout the year.

3. What do you look for in prospective students? What characteristics or skills do you want your prospective students to have when they apply?

Annick Teninge: We focus on getting people who really want to direct and try to select people who have very unique personal graphic styles, together with a strong technical background.

4. Could you please let us know what is your vision of the career that prospective students can expect by learning from you?

Annick Teninge: Many graduates start developing film projects early after graduation, so we have many graduates who have become directors, with 128 films projects than have already been produced. Renowned directors include Remi Chayé, (the director of Long Way North) and Benjamin Renner (the director of Ernest and Célestine and Le grand méchant renard et autres contes…), as well as directors of TV series: Ariol directed by Emilie Sengelin and Amandine Fredon, Michel by Dewi Noiry and Pauline Pinson, Miru Miru by Haruna Kishi, etc.
